Review Text

There is a limited amount of material available for juvenile readers on the history of India, especially modern India, but this book is totally unsatisfactory and does not fill the gap at all. About two-thirds of the text traces the rise (not much on the fall) of the British in India, and of the book's sixty-two pages, the chapter on "Modern India" (i.e. after the 1858 Mutiny) describes British contributions in eleven pages and skirts the failings of the British in two. The final, very brief chapter on "Independence" ends with the establishment of Pakistan (1947) and has the barest mention of Nehru and Gandhi. Ancient India is covered in encyclopedia extract style, and there is no sense of the tenor of Indian life here. As for the illustrations, by Clarke Hutton, they have the over-activity, the sketchiness, and the garish coloring of the Sunday funnies. The lack of index, bibliography, and glossary, and the one very insufficient map are further indications of the book's inadequacy as a supplementary text.?? (Kirkus Reviews)show more
