Review Text

A lively elementary history of France with colored pictures on every page well designed with reference to the text and in their own composition. Mr. Hutton starts with the cave painting of the bull from primitive times and ends with a sweep of contemporary French life. He touches on historical periods and happenings, including in his short paragraphs material on the artistic and cultural life of the people and their regions, and pausing occasionally to highlight a particular event- the life at the court of the Sun King, the massacre of the Huguenots in 1572 that ushered in the reign of Henry of Navarre, or the underground resistance during Nazi occupation. The pictures themselves, accurate to detail, have the flavour of the country and tell much of the story. Excellent for school or home libraries or Christmas presents. Mr. Hutton should have more countries up his sleeve. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
