Seven years old, I'd run up to bed, and then my Dad would tell me another tale from Pickwick. When I came to read the book it felt like family history: as though Mr Winkle being frightened of skating, and Mr Pickwick caught in the lady's bedroom unable to get his nightcap off, and the coachman with the mottled legs who took an imperial pint of vinegar with his oysters, were actual relatives of mine.
