Leading out from the left ventricle is the elastic aorta, which conveys oxygenated blood to be distributed to all parts of the body. The entrance to the aorta is guarded by a semi-lunar valve which prevents regurgitation of blood from the vessel during the period of ventricular relaxation. It is evident therefore that the blood leaving the right side of the heart goes only to the lungs, while that leaving the left side goes to all other parts of the body. On the other hand, blood entering the left side of the heart comes only from the lungs, while that entering the right side comes from all other parts. Therefore, since there is a complete internal separation of right and left sides of the heart, there is a complete double circulation. The left ventricular wall is about three times as thick as that of the right ventricle in view of the greater distance through which it has to force the blood. The capacity of the ventricles is a little greater than that of the auricles, and varies in the adult between 100 c.c. and a maximum of 140 c.c. Situated close to the entrance of the superior vena cava into the heart is a mass of specialized tissue known as the Srlno-auricular Node. This is the most irritable part of a normal heart and is the starting-point of the heart-beat. Near the point of entry of the coronary sinus into the right auricle is another mass of specialized tissue known as the auriouloventricular node. This is the starting--point of a band of tissue known as the Bundle of His or Stanley Kent.
