Review Text

First published in 1992 as the Family Encyclopedia of Nature, this valuable one-volume reference, designed for nonspecialists (adults and older children), has been fully updated to 1998 and more detailed colour illustrations have now been added. The result is much more sophisticated than most books in this genre. The main body of two-page spreads explain complex concepts such as how birds fly, how bees and wasps make this nests, how plants compete and defend themselves. Other sections of the book explain how each of the earth's ecosystems works. The final spreads treat the problems of nature conservation and pollution. Throughout the book, the layout includes good explanatory colour illustrations that help the text achieve a real depth of understanding. (Kirkus UK)show more
