Excerpt: ...this substance it was learned that the chemical characteristics of the motor oil had been so changed that the finished motor oil gave unexpected mileage and engine performance, and reduced friction and carbon trouble to negligible degrees. The problem was solved. Now came the next big problem. And that was to sell the goods so that the company could realize on its tremendous investment, amounting to nearly $3,000,000. The billboard people came in and advocated a billboard campaign which would have left little for either dealer, sales-promotion or newspaper advertising. It was not to their interest to see a chunk of money go to' mediums from which they derived no commissions. Nor was it to the advantage of the advertising agencies (at that time) to see a chunk of money go to billboards and other mediums from which they also derived no commissions. In view of the fact that the Associated Oil Co. was a new advertiser and not versed in the proper procedure of advertising, it was decided to engage an advertising man who would take an impartial viewpoint and spend the money so it would sell the goods in the most efficient and economical way. The first things to be done were 1. To find why Cycol was better. What was the BIG sale's idea that should lead engine owners to prefer it. 2. To arrive at the appropriation, and how that amount of money should be spent.
