Review Text

The art of persuasion, writes the author, is thoroughly learned and widely practised in all areas of mass communication. Success in many fields depends upon how well men understand and use persuasion and upon how well the recipients have been motivated to respond in the desired way. Similarly, an understanding and application of persuasion will help the preacher to achieve his end, which is to proclaim the Gospel in such a way that his message meets men where they are and seeks to bring them into closer relationship with God and man. Toward this end Mr. Sleeth, Professor at Garret Institute, Evanston, takes some of the basic principles of persuasion and applies them to the field of preaching. "Persuasion by Character", "Reason as Persuasion", "Emotion as Persuasion", "Language of Persuasion", "Delivery as Persuasion", are some of the helpful chapters. This is a book on the technique rather than the theory of preaching , and should be a welcome addition to the library of any Protestant minister who wishes to improve his preaching by making it more persuasive.
