Review Text

Anyone still interested in realistic-sounding "inside" dirt on the Organization, or Honored Society, or Family (that's what they call themselves when they're not disclaiming their existence out of the other side of their mouths) should not miss this often fascinating "expose" of the manners and mores of this very American (as the author rather heavyhandedly insists) sub-Establishment. Raimondo Raffaele Occhiaccio Hodgkins likes his broads "peaceful and easy-going," but he loves his America enough to win two Silver Stars and voluntarily turn himself in on an "Unlawful Entry of a Deported Mien Charge" (conveniently after offing the mafiosos who did him dirty on dope deals during his involuntary exile). Unfortunately for him and the Organization, the heat comes on in an odd last hundred pages where fact ("no-knock" and "search-and-enter" laws) merges with fiction in an apocalyptic reign of terror as the guardians of public sanctity go all out for the killers of Robert F. Kennedy (for once Ray is - ironically - innocent) and nearly everyone else. The wooden expository dialogue and some unbelievable characterization (e.g. Marta, the respectable Wall Street lawyer who's waited for Ray nearly thirty platonic years) shouldn't bother anybody interested in a good story - and the moral dilemma ("If I had to choose between betraying my country and my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my - " ??) is one not only gangsters have to face.
