What is the result of these totally dissimilar characteristics pertaining to transportation operation in these two cities? It will be found that Chicago in 1913, after a growth of only 65 years, covers a total area of 200 square miles, and has a population of nearly 2,500,000, and as stated has 25 trunk lines and 15 Belt and private industrial lines forming the arteries which keep pulsating 10,000 manufactories, employing one-half million people and upon which the entire community, depend. I It will now be observed that while Chicago has some facilities for water transportation, the growth of the city as a great distributing and manufacturing center is depending solely on its railroads, and with its industries scattered over 200 square miles it can be readily seen how intricate and dangerous electrical ope-ration with high-voltage alternating-current overhead wires or the direct-current third-rail system would be to all whose duties might bring them in contact with thesewires, whether employes or not. The three railroads entering New York City and doing passenger business only inside of a prescribed electric zone bear no_ comparison to the situation in Chicago. The railroads of Chicago in response to public demandhave only in part completed a great, safety first program by eliminating street crossings, in some instances railroads are elevated above the streets, in others they are depressed andiviaducts constructed over them, and in many cases even when confronted by the greatest engineering dilficulties these railroads will be found elevated one above more
