And may not the apparent want of exactness in the other part be as much intended as the exactness in that? May not two, or more than two, events have been purposely mixed up together in the prophet's vision, and that what does not belong to the one, belongs to another? that as in the seventy-second Psalm we can apply the greater part to Solomon, but suddenly we come here and there to an expression that compels us to see "that a greater than Solomon is here"; so in this place there may be a greater deliverer than any that stood on Mount Zion to judge Esau, and a higher kingdom than the Maccabees ever reached to? I shall take it in this sense, and understand by the "Saviours," the great Saviour; and His work and its issue, as the predicted event. When political danger pressed hard upon the poor and oppressed Jews, after their return from Babylon, and they were beginning again to grow up into a nation, as it very often did, with what exuberant joy did they behold a Saviour raised up for them in Mount Zion, such as Judas Maccabeus, or Simon, or any of those by whom God wrought deliverance for them? Doubtless they remembered Deborah, and Jephthah, and Samson of old, and took courage. But think, brethren, with what feelings good old Simeon or Anna, or any of those who looked for redemption in Israel, hailed the appearance in the temple on Mount Zion, of the infant Jesus, when the Spirit of God informed them that this babe in weakness was Christ the Lord. What call for faith was here! Can that be He for whom the world has waited these four thousand years! Can this be the child promised to Eve, who should bruise the serpent's head?
