Excerpt from A Pastoral Letter to the Clergy of His Diocese, Before His Triennial Visitation in April, May, and June, 1854
IN adhering to the course, which I first adopted three years ago, of addressing you by letter, rather than by a spoken Charge, I venture to think you will not deem any explanation necessary. It will enable us to enjoy, What every Bishop meeting his Clergy must wish to enjoy, the comfort and blessing of partaking together of the holy Eucharist.
In another particular, I do not follow the precedent of my last Visitation. I do not invite you to follow it with _a Diocesan Synod. My reason is a personal one - consideration of my own physical inability to encounter the fatigue of such a meeting. Permitted to reach the advanced age of seventy-six, I must not only be thankful for the measure of strength still vouchsafed to me, but I must also be cautious not to overtask it.
