Review Text

Note well the name of this author. Her themes are the age-old recurring ones of love, friendship, family life, betrayal of trust, crises of conscience. There is a hint of Mary Wesley and, in 'Out of Love', even Stella Gibbon's Cold Comfort Farm; but Victoria Clayton is essentially her own literary person. The intellectual content is stimulating, and the characters clearly belong to their varying social periods. You will laugh (sometimes out loud) and - if you have a heart - cry for the emotional pangs and human weaknesses they suffer. Altogether this novel fulfils the fundamental intent of all good fiction: helping us to understand ourselves. Very strongly recommended. Shortlisted for the 1999 Romantic Novelists Association Prize.
