Review Text

Grant has some harsh things to say about the Zionist campaign to influence British policy in the Middle East and about the early immigrants to Palestine who often "took on the appearance of a colonial elite imposed upon a 'primitive' native population." But he's every bit as critical of Arab rigidity and, above all, of the "gargantuan errors" made by the British, who completely underestimated the strength of the Arab's nationalist aspirations and attributed discontent to "bloody-mindedness." This kind of outspokenness is unusual in dealing with a subject that juvenile authors normally approach gingerly - or as outright partisans of the Zionist cause. And the observations of a wide variety of commentators, including Chaim Weizmann, Christopher Sykes and Jon Kimche - make Grant's summary especially pungent. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
