About Sally Patricia Gardner

I am an accidental novelist, having been asked to write a short article for a magazine in 2005, and not knowing when to stop. The article turned into my first novel, Lillian's Story, which was published in 2007 to great reviews and good sales. Then everything went quiet, until a friend suggested I put it on Amazon Kindle, where, to my amazement and delight, it shot to the top of the ratings. By then I had written two more novels, The Sweetest Empire and Painting by Numbers, so I put them on Kindle along with my fourth, Finding Cordelia, which came out in 2013. Those last three novels are a sort of unofficial trilogy as, even though they are totally stand alone, they are all about women who rebelled against the received morality of their times. My latest novel, A Part of Having, is about the effect of war, not only on those who are in the Services (one of the main characters was a sailor in the Falklands War), but on their families, in this case Moira, his wife, and Cathy, his daughter. When I am not writing, a lot of my time is taken up with our three dogs and several cats. My husband Ro and I live in small country cottage, which we love - though we are constantly trying not to step on our four-legged friends! My eldest son and his family live in a neighbouring village and often join us for our daily walks in nearby woods. I am also proud to be Chair of Shorelink Writers, a writing group whose members not only produce fantastic work, but are able laugh at themselves and just about everything else. Have a look at our web site on the links page. I am a fanatical reader - bereft if I don't have a book on the go! And I love going to the cinema or the theatre, and going out for a meal with friends. I've had several careers, working as an actress and looking after animals were probably the most satisfying. I still occasionally put on my 'theatrical hat' to organise the occasional charity event. But I now realise that everything, all the jobs and different life-styles, have been grist to the writing mill, So I'd better get my head down and get on with the next one. But before I do, this is my chance to say thank you to the hundreds of people who have taken the time to give my books such wonderful reviews, or emailed me about them. I wish I could thank each and every one of you personally, your words have been, and continue to be, totally inspiringshow more
