Water and some salts. Although the hydrocarbons and carbohydrates are nearly identical chemically, each containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; yet it is found that they do not easily interchange, and carbohydrate or starch cannot take the place of hydrocarbon or fat as an element. Now it is the hydrocarbons or fats which are found to be principally deficient in the soldier's food, so that, if there is any increase of ration, it ought to be in the form of butter, fat, bacon, or cheese. At present I believe a great deal of useful dripping is wasted. Captain Bagnaix, D.I. of M.--My Lord and gentlemen, there is one point to which the lecturer has referred on which I would like to make a few remarks, namely, Shooting Prizes. He says that the present system does not induce men to be anxious to become good shots, and that they look upon musketry as a fatigue; moreover, that a remedy could be found for this by returning to the old system of giving a penny a day to every qualified marksman. Now this would be a most serious state of affairs if it existed to any extent, as it means simply that soldiers don't try to shoot their best since they do not receive sufficient encouragement to do so, but I beg to differ with the lecturer, as I believe that the men are quite contented with the prizes as they are. The system proposed by the lecturer has this one great objection to it, that in order to receive a prize a man must reach a fixed standard.
