Against the turbulent backdrop of 9/11 and the Iraq War, a powerful quasi-government "black operations" network based in North America sets up a vast honey-trap scheme. One of its prime targets is Salman Mirani, a wealthy Torontonian suspected of links to Islamic terrorists. And the lure used by the controllers is one of the "Gorgeous Geishas" by the name of Ola Jallo, a young Canadian beauty of Hungarian descent. However, while trying to entrap Mirani, Ola herself becomes entrapped: she falls in love with him. "The Painted Eyes" is the story of their doomed love.

Our customer reviews

I have just completed Prem Malabari\'s \"The Painted Eyes\" for a second time. The overwhelming sensation is one of exhaustion. Such is the impact of reading this veritable landslide of the English language. At times the novel is a conventional romance, a spy/adventure story, at other times a pastiche, and then a musing on Indian philosophy, ancient Mesopotamian history, Attila the Hun, the conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11, Saddam Hussein, and the maneuverings of the powerful. \"The Painted Eyes\" is like a roller coaster around the world, where shifting political realities throw the flow of events in unpredictable directions. Directing his large cast of characters, a motley crew of high-principled dreamers, innocents and detestable opportunists - all actors on this strange stage called the contemporary world - Malabari has produced what amounts to a love affair with the English language, a triumph of wordsmithing and literary invention.
