He wanted to repeat, because he could only repeat, what he had already said often enough and plainly enough, that from the bottom of his heart he believed in the Bible as the revelation of God to sinful man--(loud applause)--a thing which he might be permitted to tell Dr. Smith found him long before he found it. (Loud and prolonged applause.) He had never made any claim to discover the revelation of God through the Bible. (Renewed applause.) With regard to the authority of Christ, and the relation of the Old to the New Testament, he had never used any words in his volume or any where else to say there was any discrepancy between one Testament and the other. Nor had he paused in following out, either in his class lectures or published writings, the very close and intimate connection that prevailed between the two. He had always held and impressed on his students, as he had done in that volume, that they came from the same Divine hand, and that the great proof of their divinity was the ethical and historic closeness of connection that existed between them. In regard to that, he could not see how gentlemen had spoken as they had spoken that day on that subject. He proceeded to illustrate his views on the point by two passages, which he read from his book. Those quotations, he said, also disposed of Dr. M'Ewan's statement, that he (Professor Smith) did not touch on the authority of Christ in regard to the scriptures.
