Excerpt from The P. C. P. Alumni Report, Vol. 29: November, 1892 Mr. J. L. Wilson, of Philadelphia, addressed the meeting upon the subject of Shaw's gas-testing Machine, exhibiting the same. He claimed that it was possible to detect 1% per cent. Of mine gas with it, whereas the Davy lamp, under usual conditions, will not show less than two per cent. The machine is a form of double air-pump, having a permanent upright cylinder at one end, and a movable one attached to a graduated scale at the other end. Through the one cylinder passes either air or gases, and through the other passes the mine gas or illuminating gas.
