Review Text

This new collection, chosen by Sherrin, is organized by themes from 'Actors and Acting' through to 'Youth', stopping at many places in between. All the greats are here (Shakespeare, Shaw, Dickens, Coward) plus some brand-new quotes to illustrate that the art of the excellent quip is far from declining. Includes quotes on humour itself, like this from the brilliant Alan Bennett: 'Mark my words, when a society has to resort to the lavatory for its humour, the writing is on the wall' and quotes: 'it seems pointless to be quoted if one isn't going to be quotable... it's better to be quotable than honest' (Tom Stoppard). A great anthology. (Kirkus UK)show more
