Nevertheless, it is true that, if a believer grievously falls, God, though He forgives at once upon confession, does not always see well to restore the soul immediately to an assured sense of pardon and favour. It may be that the hiding of God's face for a time is a needful discipline. Faith shall assuredly be rewarded, but, like the moon, it is the office of faith to rule the night, and the darkness of night may for a season be permitted to prevail as a chastisement for past folly. IV. One other point remains to be noticed; it is the responsibility entailed. Therefore it behoves us to walk humbly and speak tremblingly, and judge ourselves in order that we be not judged.
