This unusual book is the result of a National Year of Reading competition open to all the primary schools of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. The competition, run by Macmillan Children's Books in association with The Book People, asks children to give their thoughts - in prose, verse and illustrations - about what the new millennium might bring. How will we look? What new inventions might there be? How will we travel? The competition was judged by Macmillan Children's Books in May and June of 1999. There are over 500 authors and illustrators! The children are aged between 4 and 12 years and come from all over the UK and Republic of Ireland, as there are regional and overall winners for each age group.show more

Review Text

'Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings'... this is an amusing, touching and extraordinary collection of children's thoughts on what the new millennium will bring, which are the results of a competition to celebrate the National Year of Reading. They include such gems as; 'The millennium bug is a small, ugly, slimy creature. He comes at midnight to bite the years in your home'; 'I don't know why we can't have a new type of person from wither Mars or Venus or even the moon'; 'No teachers, no blackboard,/ No uniform in the millennium./ Where's the school?/ No books, no classroom./ We're on the Internet, my friends and I,/ Getting our lessons in the sky.' A fascinating insight into what children dream of and what concerns them. (7 yrs +) (Kirkus UK)show more
