Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ...effort. Third Prize, No. 75. One of the most interesting examples of interferences by the Black Queen that I have seen. Black's 1--Qe5 forces the flight-giving key, and explains the several Rook tries. The key is partly indicated by the Pa2, but most solvers will not find it any too easy. There is mutual interference of Black Queen and Bishop at d5; but unfortunately 1--Be5 makes a dual. In a 2-er of O'Keefe's this flaw is overcome (b2Rib2; 3qiBpi; 8; ip2Q2S; ipR4r; 3kipip; Sipip2K; 2Bss3. Key Qf4 ), but in our 75 the other points of interest, especially the key, more than atone for this slip. Although 75 and O'Keefe's 2er are related in their Loci, the execution is fully distinct enough not seriously to lower the rating of 75, at al' events not more than one place in the award. Fourth Prize, 76. Another very remarkable Black Knight cross check problem. Comparing it with 73 we might call the latter a fine all-around problem, and 76 rather a fine tasker. Its key is very poor, taking Black's only flight and providing for checks which already exist. Its Locus (relationship of Black King to position of Bl. S and R) is commonplace, having been used by many composers (F. Janet, J913. 4Q3; 4R1K1; 7r; 1S2B3; 2Pikisi; 3B3R; qsrp; 5S1B. Key Qh5), while in 73 the relationship was entirely new. The checking Rc6 is pinned, and captured in one variation, neither of which occur with the B in 73. All these things count against the problem. On the other hand stands out the remarkable single fact that the Black Knight gives five accurate cross checks (counting the capture as one). This has never been done, except with a White King battery and Guidelli's No. 844 with 5 cross-by Black Bishop but with promotion key, so that we have here a pioneer of an...show more
