B/lDC1'E.--In a large oval centre, the efligy of St. Catherine, enameled proper, holding a cross. The radiating limbs of the cross, enriched with diamonds, protrude from the circumference of the oval. Reverse: Azure and green; on the top of a golden tower, an eerie; at the base, two eagles rising with snakes in their beaks to feed their young, and above, on a scroll, " 1Equat Munla Uomparis." The Second Class badge slightly differs. R. sh. to l. s. 3T/1R.--A solid gold Star of four points, enriched with pearls or diamonds, and in the centre the effigy of St. Catherine, as on the badge, encircled by a white fillet inscribed "1Equat Mu-nia C0mpam's." Wahlen says that it is a silver radiating Star, with the Imperial Eagle in the centre, within an azure fillet.--XXVIII., 163, 164, 165. HABI T.--Cloth of silver, wrought in gold. MOTTO.--"F0r Lore and for Country." RlBBON.--Formerly blue; now scarlet, with two silver stripes, on which is embroidered, in Russ, "For Love and Fatherla: nd." HE ORDER or ALEXANDER NEWsKY' was founded, by the Empress (z ax Catherine I., 5th April 1725, agreeably to the intentions of Peter the Great, in honour of Alexander, son of Jaraslov, Prince of 4 1 Novgorod (1240), who, having defeated the Swedes in battle near the Neva, from the latter river received his surname. The Order is both Civil and Military, and is_ open to no one below the rank of Major-General. The Order receives an annual Imperial bounty.
