While investigating her aunt's death, Kat meets two men whose interest in her is not limited to her search for the truth. At the center of all this is her Chinese not-quite-cousin, Lei Ling, whose hand drawn pictures are credited with minor miracles in the countryside around her home village. Kat flies to China to meet Patrick Chen, who was hired by her aunt to find Lei Ling. Instead he finds a deepening fascination with Kat who is just beginning to return his feelings when he disappears. They are re-united in the Orchid Garden where Kat's investigation ends violently, and she is forced to leave China immediately.
