Excerpt: ... purposes of the school, it had already outgrown its quarters and building operations were going on by which there would be almost twice the space available that they then had. In spite of the congestion that necessarily existed till the new quarters were ready for occupancy, I found the physical conditions sufficiently good, and, in that part of the school devoted to the paying pupils, the classes were small and fairly well graded. One feature of this school was a distinctly unpleasant surprise, and I have never encountered it elsewhere. All the non-paying pupils were crowded into one small room, twenty-one of them, of all ages and all stages of education. Two nuns were in charge, but the room was scarcely large enough to have properly accommodated six or eight pupils and one teacher. It could scarcely be called anything but "storage." I happened to be taken to this class first of all and so was surprised, later, to find a number of other small classes each with a single teacher and in good sized, well ventilated rooms. Close questioning developed the fact that these latter pupils were paying an ample tuition fee, while the twenty-one girls I had first seen packed into the small, ill ventilated room were free pupils being educated by the order. The work that was being done with the paying pupils seemed quite good. The quality of the voices was excellent and the character of the speech more fluent and natural than in some of the other Spanish schools I have visited. The educational standards were not high, but the children seemed to be getting a fairly good grammar school course and a considerable spontaneity in the use and comprehension of language.
