To get the spilling for the forward end of the garboard, the batten will have to be trimmed away till it fits the babbet roughly. and the arcs drawn in closely together around the curve of the forefoot. The forward ends of three of four of the lower planks will have to be steamed before being worked into place, as otherwise they are very likely to split. The edges of the plank must be jointed up true and fair. that the seams may be of uniform width throughout. and he tight on the inside, with sutficient bevel to leave them open on the outside about one-eighth of an inch to receive the caulking. VVhen the planking is coinpleted the boat is turned over and planed off roughly before caulking. The caulking can best be done with a Parrot caulking wheel, which is a small cast iron handle with a small wheel in the end and can be had at any ship chandlery store. VVith this tool. the thread of cotton is stretched along the seam and rolled in with the wheel, the thread being large enough to fill the seam coinpactly to within a sixteenth of an inch of the surface. and care being taken not to force any of it through to the inside. he will fetch along a bucket of minnows or a bunch of crawfish to key up the bass; he will even abandon the dams for a spell of "pikiiig" if the patron shows a disposition to get ' fish by hook or crook.
