Review Text

A good job, this - a tense, virile, concentrated story of a cavalry post in the Southwest Territory (1870's or later), and a detail of twelve odd sent out to face a thousand savage Apaches. Heading the detail is Captain Richard Lance, severe, disciplinary, ??aloof, and the most hated man on the post; tormenting him is the knowledge that a fine soldier died doing a job he funked. With him are the men who hate him most, men whose advancement he'd justifiably balked, a Lieutennant whose wife Lance loves - not unreciprocally, a trumpeter he knows to be a coward. Lance had objectively selected these men - knowing they were of least value to the post. Stationed at a mountain pass, attacks are made against Lance by his own men, their scout is butchered by the Apaches, and finally the raids begin - with, at the close, Lance and another man turning them back against odds of certain death. Through this, Lance regains his self-respect - and the woman he loves. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
