Description

'He has a gun.' 'Who? Tell me, where are you? Who has a gun?' 'I love you, Mum.' An ordinary school day in March, snowflakes falling, classroom freezing, kids squealing with delight, locker-doors slamming. Then the shooting started. No-one dared take one breath...He's holding a gun to your child's head. One wrong answer and he says he'll shoot. This morning you waved goodbye to your child. What would you have said if you'd known it might be the last time? Praise for Heather Gudenkauf 'A great thriller, probably the kind of book a lot of people would chose to read on their sun loungers. It will appeal to fans of Jodi Picoult' - Radio Times 'Deeply moving and exquisitely lyrical, this is a powerhouse of a debut novel' - Tess Gerritsen 'Beautifully written, compassionately told, and relentlessly suspenseful' - Diane Chamberlainshow more

What will you do when you hear your kid crying on the phone only to learn that they're at school, with a stranger and a gun? One Breath Away is an emotional story of a frightening situation that can happen to anybody. The worst part is that you can't do anything to protect your own. One Breath Away has great potential however my experience reading it pose numerous issue that hindered it to become a favorite. I believe I am part of the minority that had issues with this book but don't get me wrong, it wasn't that bad but it didn't live to my expectations. As I've indicated in my reviews of books with the same intensity as One Breath Away, it is better to have a single POV rather than multiple voices. One because it loses the drama and intensity of the situation. Two, it loses the initial emotion. Third, there are times that multiple POV slows the pacing that you would want for this type of dramatic and emotional read. Multiple POV works great but in this case, it didn't. Pacing is a huge influence when loving or hating a book cause who wants to get bored right? Pacing in One Breath Away was greatly influenced with the multiple POV. Some characters slowed the story down whereas some increase the anticipation. There were time that the story was so slow it became boring but there were also times where the story gets so exciting it seems that it is rushed. Character development in this story was amazing though. I actually loved how you get bits and pieces of a characters life as you go from page to page. You don't get everything in one sitting but rather take on a journey of discovery and you get the chance to know them with one information at a time. The mystery, once uncovered, seemed weak to me. Everything was built around the mystery and anticipation of who the gunman is but when the information was lain down - it didn't provide the impact it needed. The mystery maybe weak but the plot was gripping which made this book super intriguing. Who doesn't want a book that captures a dramatic event - unfortunately it didn't mesh well for me. Gudenkauf is an extremely talented writer and I wanted to enjoy this book as much as I hope I would but the issues I had was just too great to factors to consider. It is a love and hate relationship - most part I love it but there were parts that I wasn't into the book. I expected more and needed more from One Breath Away and Gudenkauf but for now its just didn't work out for me.show more

I started reading and within a short space of time I found myself turning page after page....just one more page, just one more page became my motto. I found the way she told each persons viewpoint was well written, easy to follow and fell into place as you read each persons take. You wouldn't be sorry if you purchased this book...well worth the read.show more
