Excerpt: ...was being made, and in a resolution presented by and originating in the Finance Committee, provision was made for a Commission which was requested to investigate the matter and to present to this convention of the Supreme Lodge such facts bearing on the case as would enable the Supreme Lodge as at present constituted, to decide intelligently as to the expediency of establishing a National Sanatorium as well as to present in brief form the conditions surrounding tuberculosis in this country and Canada today, and such material as could be secured which would show what probable amount of_benefit such an institution would result in, and what necessity for it exists. This Commission has taken up this work of investigation and for the two years intervening since its creation have studied the question from every available standpoint. One of the first things that confronted the Commission was the necessity of deciding whether we were to report as to the feasibility and expediency of establishing a National Sanatorium at Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the acceptance of the subsidy of the citizens of that city which was made to the corporation above referred to and which we have been' unofficially informed, would still be available if their offer should be accepted by the Supreme Lodge; or whether it was our duty and we were expected to report to this convention, as to the expediency of establishing a sanatorium ANY PLACE, leaving the matter of location to be disposed ofalong with other details---in a subsequent and at a riper period in the history of the project.
