The heavy debts upon our Church property, with the long-continued and severely-felt want of steady and remunerating employment or business among our Church-members, have rendered meeting current expenses far more than usually difficult. The debts resting upon the Church property of the district amount in the aggregate to something over $400,000. This at six per cent would demand over $24,000 in interest-money during the year. The real amount has been much above that figure. There has been paid also during the year, by the Churches of Boston and vicinity, about $30,000, to cancel the indebtedness, above assets, of the late home or city Missionary and Christian Extension Society. Thus over $54,000 have been drawn from the resources of the Churches, over and above their running expenses. Under these circumstances it would not be expected that Church indebtedness could be much decreased, or other interests share largely in the contributions of our people. We have been chiefly solicitous to hold on where we were, and wait. ' And yet something has been done beyond this. The Church at Jamaica Plain has paid mostly, and fully provided for, its indebtedness of $6,000, and raised an additional $1,000 for repairs, &c. The very popular pastor and his people have been workers together in achieving this, and even greater results of a spiritual character. The youngest of o_ur organized societies, Mount Pleasant Church, Boston, has paid a mortgage of $500 on its chapel, and raised a goodly sum towards the purchase of a suitable site for a permanent church. The Church at Franklin, through the active exertions of its efiicient pastor, has succeeded in paying ofi some $700 or $800, of floating debt. But this Church is still under a. burden...show more
