Review Text

In this, Marcus Didius Falco's 12th ancient Roman adventure, Davis once again succeeds in convincing us that in a previous existence we, too, roamed the serpentine streets of Rome, smelled its smells and touched its sun-soaked stones. As amateur poet and semi-professional playwright (see Last Act in Palmyra) Falco is a natural for the job of disclosing the murderer of Chrysippus, not only a vanity publisher and occasional 'sponsor' of (mainly) indigent authors - but a banker as well: a case which turns out to be as tangled and knotted as always, and not without life-threatening violence. Davis is completely at home in the past - with a licence that allows her harmless, affectionate fun, and occasionally dagger-sharp assaults on the ignoble and unethical. (Kirkus UK)show more
