Frank Compton's life has been nonstop trouble since he and Bayta, a woman with a shrouded past, started working for the mysterious alien Spiders that run the intragalactic Quadrail. He's like an old-time railroad detective, but these trains traverse the galaxy, end instead of robbers and murderers, he's up against the Modhri, the polyp-borne group-mind with thousands - maybe millions - of "walkers" across the galaxy, innocents who are unwitting pawns of a malevolent being that can make them do whatever it wants. And it wants to control everyone in the galaxy.Compton has already thwarted the Modhri's plans twice. But each time, it has found yet another way to infiltrate the one uninfected civilization: Earth. So when he walks into his Manhattan apartment after saving the galaxy again, he's ready for a good night's sleep. Instead, a young woman points his own gun at him. Her ten-year-old sister is in trouble on New Tigris and only he can help her. Great. He's dead tired, it's late, he doesn't know her, and he's got enough problems without this, so he tells her to try the police. But a couple of hours later, the police start pounding on his door. The woman and another person are dead, both killed with Frank's gun. In his gut he knows the Modhri is behind this, so he's got to find the kid sister on New Tigris, or more people will die. His influential friend, the chameleon-like Bruce McMicking, will bail him out, and he'll find Bayta; they're the only hope against the monster.
