Excerpt from The Nursery, 1871, Vol. 10: A Monthly Magazine for Youngest Readers
Paul is not only the captain but the drummer of his com pany. He is also a general. His men are armed, - some of them with wooden swords, and some with bulrushes got from the swamp near by.
I must tell you of a great battle which took place the other day, and in which the Invincibles proved themselves brave soldiers. Gen. Paul led them on, and showed that he was born to command.
A flock of geese had come into the garden from the com mon near by. It was Saturday afternoon. School did not keep, and the Invincibles were out in full force.
