This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ...Mr. Clay, you are getting careless in your old age. Look at that shoe. See how it pinches my foot. Is that the way to shoe a decent old horse like me? Now, are not you ashamed of yourself? Ease that shoe at once. Take it off, and put it on in a better way.'" "Can it be that old Sol said all that by his look?" asked Mr. Lane, laughing. "All that, and more," said Mr. Clay. "He stood still as a post while I took off the shoe. And then I put it on so it might not hurt him. And, when I had done it, he gave a merry neigh, as if to say, ' Thank you, Mr. Clay, ' and off he ran. And now, if you will go back to the field, you will find him there eating his breakfast." What did old Sol do? He lifted his hoof gently, very gently, and pushed the child away out of his reach. When the maid who had care of the child came running up, she saw on its dress in front the mark of a horse-shoe. Little boys should be careful how they go too near the legs of horses; for there are not many horses who would behave like Sol. Many horses will kick and bite. Such horses have perhaps been treated badly. The horse knows those who are kind to him. But it is not wise to play with horses. Horse play is apt to be rough play. Emily Carter. TEE SICK DOLL. "Oh! can it be," said Mary, "that my doll is sick, sick, sick? Oh!...show more
