Not illustrated. 1847 edition. Excerpt: ...pall In its sanctuary I have seen. No mourner weeps o'er my own loved one-He is borne to a lowly grave! And his bloodless brow looks deadly calm, As the white plumes o'er him Wave! My brain is turned, you may truly say, When his spirit from earth has fled, And I linger on 'mid the young and gay, Though he sleeps amid the dead. Were he false, my brain would madly burn--But no---then I smile on thee; For thy voice and form bright tokens bring Of his memory back to me! But away, away--why haunt my sight While this world I dully roam?--I feel, I feel the blasting blight Which bears me to my home. Strangers, strangers, I smile on thee-Why should my grief impart One pang of woe to mar thy glee, Though I bear a broken heart? SONG. Smile on life's folly--forget its care, Cull the young blossoms that look most fair; Think not on sorrow, but all that is gay, Come to the forest--away!--away! Forget the past, and be glad to day, Come to the forest--away!--away! Pass the keen thorn and pluck the rose, For a while it will woo thee into, repose; Then scatter its leaves--they were born for decay, Come away to the forest away--My own! my own! how I love each word, 'Tis a sweet and a sacred tone; Within my heart what thoughts are stirred, As you fondly echo--my own, my own. My own I my own! with its volumes untold, Speaks joy to this heart so lone; 'Tis a treasure more rich than a dower of gold, Then breathe theloved title--my own! my OWI1! My own! my own! 0! I would not change For the gems of the secret mine; Nor let earth.'s vanity estrange My heart from being linked with thine. My own! my own! ah, in future years, May I hear the same sweet tone, To soothe my sorrow and dry my tears, Echo on to the last--my own! my own!...
