Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ...from C. R. (Chas. II.), June 6, 1669: "I have seen your" (Madame's) " letter to '341'" (cypher number for Buckingham)... "he shall be brought into all the businesse before he can suspect anything, except what concerns C. R. which he must not be trusted with " (probably his intended or pledged conversion)... "I do long to hear from ' 340 ' (Arundel) or to see him heere, for till I see the paper you mention, which comes from ' 113' (Lionne) I cannot say more than I have done." June 7, 1669. C. R. writes: "To conclude, remember how much the secret of this matter importes, and take care no new body be acquainted with it, till I see what Arundell brings C. R. (cyphers omitted) in answer to his propositions.... I would faine know, which I cannot do, but by Arundel, how ready France is to break with Holland. This is the game that would, as I conceive, most accomodate the interests both of England and France... the sooner you despatch Arundel, the more clearly we shall be able to judge of the whole matter." On the 24th June we have another letter in which the King expresses his impatience for Lord Arundel's return. "It will be very difficult for me to say anything to you upon the propositions till Arundel's return hithere; and if he makes many objections, which it may be are not altogether reasonable, you must not wonder at it, as he is not a man much versed in affairs of state " (for his had been a military career, and he also " kept " a conscience), "so there are many scruples he may have, which will not be so heere, and I am confident that when we have heard the reasons of all sides, we shall not differ...
