Review Text

A second thriller from the author of Profit and Sheen (1986). Here, having served time in prison to protect his wealthy Central American father and uncle, a New Orleans businessman tries to find out why such an unpleasant sacrifice was called for. How far does filial duty take one? It took Tony Curbel, of the land-owning Central American Curbelo family, to a penitentiary in, New Orleans - where his father had required him to go in order that Tony's father and uncle might remain free. It came as a bit of a shock to Tony, who had been working for years in what he thought was a perfectly straight family-brokerage business. Turned out, however, that he was actually laundering rather dingy dollars; that the family labor brokerage was as bent as a boomerang; and that he had to take the rap for the family sins, including the surprise shipment of a large load of marijuana. After serving enough time to learn the depressing ins and outs of prison life, a now thoroughly cynical Tony Curbel is rather suddenly and surprisingly sprung by a weaselly detective known only as Skinny. Skinny, who, although not a candidate for office, speaks of himself constantly in the third person, has a job for Tony to do as the price of his early release: he wants Curbel to spy on his uncle and get enough information about the labor exchange to put the man away. Tony is to cooperate with sexy Stacey Veldran, his uncle's assistant and a woman with an agenda and fascinating history of her own. Ripe with satisfying, decadent subtropical atmosphere, this one offers a fashionably confusing plot that includes plenty of betrayal and corruption - and several entertaining side-trips to Central America.
