Review Text

NO MULES replaces NO BLACKS on the front of the general store in Pink River, circumstantially (kraal) South Africa, when Faan, refused a chance to buy a flute, sends his white mule Golo into the store instead. Golo wreaks havoc, Faan gets the flute and the shopkeeper changes the sign - but this sophisticated spoof of segregation introduces the problem too abruptly and disposes of it too accidentally to be either realistic or revealing. The opening episodes - Faan and Golo helping his father and the other woodsmen - are amusing for their laconic laughter at the boss who's in a hurry ("Sogetamoveon") but text and illustrations, sharing a raffish vitality with Mr. Papas' Greek Tasso, assume excessive worldliness of the audience for a brief picture book.
