Not illustrated. 1823 edition. Excerpt: ...our established Church may be justified or excused, how I 1 Cor. i. 24. far it must be condemned as heretical or schismatical. I have said, He that b.elieveth comprehends every Christian who acknowledges the authenticity of the sacred Scriptures, and confesses the truths there revealed. Now this concession may perhaps be looked upon as a justification of all those in this kingdom, who separate themselves from the established Church, and as allowing an equal degree of purity to every denomination of Christians which exists. But such cannot be the opinion of any rational man, for however distant we may be from the intolerant principles of the Church of Rome, in confining salvation to those of our own communion, yet we cannot be so liberal, or lukewarm, as to look upon every discordant sect, with an eye of equal regard. When we endeavour to reclaim the Dissenters, and to bring them back to that Church which they have forsaken, we are reminded of our own separation from the Church of Rome, and desired to allow that liberty to them, which we then claimed for ourselves. And this we are ready to concede. For the leaders of the reformation did not withdraw themselves from the Papal authority without justifying their dereliction of that corrupt system, by the evidence of Scripture. One of the fundamental articles of our Church, and indeed of every Church that has any pretensions to evangelical purity, is the accordance of its doctrines with the sacred canon, and though different churches will interpret the Scripture in such a manner, as to justify their own symbol of faith, yet, as God has given us no infallible guide to determine these controverted points, every man is left at liberty to decide for himself.
