Description
In 1886, a mysterious travelling circus becomes an international sensation. Open only at night, constructed entirely in black and white, Le Cirque des Reves delights all who wander its circular paths and warm themselves at its bonfire.
Although there are acrobats, fortune-tellers and contortionists, the Circus of Dreams is no conventional spectacle. Some tents contain clouds, some ice. The circus seems almost to cast a spell over its aficionados, who call themselves the reveurs - the dreamers. At the heart of the story is the tangled relationship between two young magicians, Celia, the enchanter's daughter, and Marco, the sorcerer's apprentice. At the behest of their shadowy masters, they find themselves locked in a deadly contest, forced to test the very limits of the imagination, and of their love...
A fabulous, fin-de-siecle feast for the senses and a life-affirming love story, The Night Circus is a captivating novel that will make the real world seem fantastical and a fantasy world real.

Review quote
Lush, evocative, dreamlike...a magical, coming-of-age story * Sunday Times * Dark and dreamy; a captivating love story * Stylist Magazine * Deliciously inventive... Don't imagine this is a light, frothy tale. For all her humorous touches, Morgernstern...has produced something darker than night -- Mary Crockett * Scotsman * Dazzling * Marie Claire * The only response to this novel is simply: wow. It is a breathtaking feat of imagination, a flight of fancy that pulls you in and wraps you up in its spell * The Times *

I've read tons of books from the more classical genre's (William Golding, Paulo Coelho, Harper Lee) to fantasy (Tolkien, Raymond E. Feist, Robin Hobb) and all sorts in between, but not one that made me feel a part of the story like this one. Yes, this is my best read so far! If only we lived in a world a circus like this would exist...
At start it can be a bit confusing due to the jumps in time but at the top of each chapter the time line is stated and this clarifies things. Once you start reading you cannot stop and you don't want the story to end, ever... It is a magical dream where you escape to and don't want to leave from. I won't say anything about the story itself cause this would all be spoilers, just simply start reading an be amazed by all the wonders, magic, friendship and love :)show more

I really enjoyed this book, something totally different, and for a debut novel excellent. I would be interested to see what Erin Morgenstern comes up with next!
Celia and Marco are selected to compete in a magical battle. Thier whole lives are geared towards it, though they do not know the rules or when or where it will take place! And they do not even know who they are to battle at first.
However an amazing circus is opened to the world, a circus that is open only from Dawn until dusk! and both Celia and Marco live and work within it. I won't tell you anymore but surfice it to say you will be hooked, enthralled and delighted with each new twist of the story. It has a magical feel to it, and includes some wonderful and unusual characters. You will be in for a treat if you decide to read this unusual book!show more

I thought i would take a chance with this book as i have been a little over some of the themes i have been reading. With this in mind i couldn't have picked a more magical book, I was enchanted first by the beautiful presentation of this book from dustcover to the delightful hardcover and dipped pages. From the first paragraph i was hookied the description is amazing and your there inside the circus and i really never wanted to leave...ever! the only thing i found a little befuddling was the way the time line jumped a bit, but in saying that there are time and location promps at the top of each chapter. I found this book to be on the very top of my "to read again and again" list. The chaarater as so enchanting and the circus itself is a world of its own. Truely amazing read, a must for any one searching for a magical escape.show more
