Excerpt: ...his situation as secretary, for reasons which he regarded as sufficient, Mr. Mann again turned his attention to politics; and some five or six years ago, he was elected arepresentative to congress from the (then) 9th district in Massachusetts, to succeed ex-president Adams. Perhaps no man in the district was more worthy or better fitted to follow his " illustrious predecessor" than he; and we believe the influence which he exerted at Washington was.of the most salutary kind. Some of his speeches there were quite as creditable as any of his educational addresses. But it is not our province to speak of him politically, but simply as a. friend of education. It is proper to add, however, that after serving two 'terms in congress, he was nominated last fall as the " free soil" candidate for governor of Massachusetts, and though defeated, he received more votes by far, than any other candidate of that party. His friends ha.d strong _hopes of his success; but with two competitors in the field, it could hardly have been expected. Sometime during the last year Mr. Mann was invited to the presidency of Antioch College, Ohio, an institution which was about to be opened under the most favorable auspices. He was understood to accept the invitation, but whether he has yet removed there, is more than we are able to state. But we are confident that it is a sphere to which he is eminently adapted, and one which he would fill with honor to himself and to the satisfaction of its patrons. In personal appearance Mr. Mann is rather prepossessing. His figure is tall, straight and rather commanding. His head, which by the way, is one of the best developed, phrenologically speaking, that we have ever seen, is thinly covered with grey...show more
