(b) Readz'ng.---The importance of this subject is in theory universally recognized and the proper teaching of it quite as universal-, ly neglected. While in the lower I grades the results are frequently 1 fairly good, in the upper grades they are discouragingly bad. To better this condition the following, recommendations are offered: 1 That all agencies for the training of teachers give adequate atten-. tion to method in advanced reading, and, what is more vital, to persistent drill and practice in it. 2 That teachers and pupils of the, upper grades form the habit of making careful preparation for recitation work in intensive reading. 3 That suitable examination tests for promotion be prescribed and rigidly adhered to. 4 That intelligent discrimination, be exercised in the choice of suitable literature. Satisfactory results must depend upon the employment of proper means. The importance of the subject must be recognized in practice as well as in theory before we can hope for any marked improvement. The teacher's qualifications for reading are all-important. He should have a taste for good literature and should have acquired the 1 habit of reading it; he should have 1, of simple sentences.--should be able to get thought readily from the printed page and express it clearly, intelligibly and impressively; he should be able to awaken and maintain the interest ' of his pupils in the subject; should be competent to help them to see and feel "the good, the true and the beautiful" in what is read, ...show more
