Dependents. 39.5% of teachers report that they have one or more persons dependent upon them for support. A larger percentage of men than of women report dependents, i. e., 75% of men and 35% of women, and a slightly larger percentage of the urban than of the rural group report dependents. One supervisor gives--"having to support family"--as one of the conditions most detrimental to the health and general welfare of teachers. Responsibility in regard to' dependents increases steadily with number of years' teaching. 25% of teachers having taught less than 6 years report dependents. 43% of teachers having taught 6 to 11 years report dependents. 56% of teachers having taught 11 to 16 years report dependents. 58% of teachers having taught 16 to 21 years report dependents. 62% of teachers having taught 21 years and over report dependents. Outside Work To Supplement Income. 37.8% of teachers engage in work outside regular school teaching to supplement their income. 15.8% report outside work during the school year; some in this group engage in outside work during both the school year and the summer season. 22.0% report outside work during the summer only. 12% more rural than urban teachers report outside work--a difference due entirely to the greater amount of summer work of rural teachers. Likewise, a larger percentage of men than of women report outside work to supplement income, i. e., 74.8% of men; 33.7% of women. Kinds of outside work reported are, chiefly, teaching (reported by more urban teachers); manual work (reported by more rural); miscellaneous positions, musical or business positions, and sewing.
