Review Text

This is a scholarly attempt to evaluate the role of the new critics in literary history, among them T. S. Eliot, Allen Tate, Cleanth Brooks. For the most part they stand for a kind of neo-classicism in poetry as opposed to romanticism, for the dry versus the fluid school of verse, for precise, textual exegesis as against intuitive, impressionistic criticism. Hedging a good deal, the author does not seem to care for them. The main value of the volume is that it is a sturdy attempt to define aesthetics, particularly poetics, and these fine spun arguments may be provocative and provide further controversey, among a very limited audience.
