Review Text

When writer Joseph Kyle dies, his son David is assigned the task of packing up his desk, files, etc.; among the papers are those pertaining to "the boy" - a three-year-old who was murdered and tossed from a car some 20 years before. Like his father before him, David becomes obsessed with the case: Who was the boy and who killed him? A sympathy card sends David to Philadelphia, turns into a viable clue, and soon David and old-friend/new-love Judy Sears are off in the Poconos visiting a hospital and learning of a doctor and his relationship with "the boy's" mother, Sandy. David's sleuthing eventually sends him to Ocean Bridge, where Sandy now lives; he hears a tale of an illegitimacy, an accidental (though venomously cruel) death, and everything else he needs to know about "the boy" - including his name: Toby. Finally, after a fatal, horrific beach confrontation, David will at last be able to write the end to Toby's - and his dad's - lives. Sentimental, bland writing from an author noted for literary excesses (Voices, The Captain); cardboard villain, and silly women. Overall, a feeble endeavor with the only interesting characters being the dead ones - Kyle Sr. and Toby. (Kirkus Reviews)
