Eric is 31, a debt counsellor and his life is a lie. When he's not busy getting the dispossessed of West Cumbria's debts written off, he's bouncing the cost of his increasingly excessive lifestyle between several accounts - some of which aren't exactly high-street. His girlfriend Charlotte has no idea how imperilled their home is.
Until the postcards begin to arrive, each with one word written on the back of a photo of a caravan: Coerce. Harrassment. Distress. Eric has a frightening puzzle to solve while juggling his finances. And life gets more complicated as he reconnects with the old love of his life in Manchester: Julie, a strange, fragile body artist.
To save his house, Eric hatches a plan with his client Doreen to max out her cards, sell the goods, divide the spoils and declare her bankrupt. He needs the money urgently: Manchester loanshark the Overspill Mayor is making sinister threats to Julie, demanding to know where his little Damon-from-Blur-boy is. And Eric would do anything for Julie to stop her from going away again.

Review quote
This clever novel couldn't be more timely ... Forces us to confront society's incredible thirst for credit * Observer * Cometh the hour, cometh the novelist - it would be hard to imagine a book that scored a more penetrating bull's-eye on the target of the moment * Independent * Addresses the current issue of bad credit: an amusing black comedy in how not to manage finances-or relationships * FT * One hundred and fifty words by Gaffney are more worthwhile than novels by a good many others * Guardian *
