Dr. Cooley is a fellow and former vice-president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member and former vice-president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also a member of the Society of Naval Engineers and of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. He was granted the degree of LL.D. from the Michigan Agricultural College. Dr. Waddell is a civil engineer and the author of numerous books and papers of scientific value. He is the former professor of engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Imperial University of Japan. He is an eminent designer of bridges, elevated railroads, lighthouses, and other important-public works. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the British Institute of Civil Engineers, la Societie des Ingenieurs Civils of France, Kogaku Kyokai (Japanese Engineering Society), the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, and the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. Dr. Waddell was decorated by the mikado of Japan with the order of a Knight Commander of the Rising Sun, and by the Grand Duchess Olga of Russia with the first class order of her Societe de Bienfaisance for service as principal engineer of the Trans-Alaska-Siberian Railway.
