The power is generated at 11,000 volts and stepped up to 110,000 volts, then transmitted, in part, to St. Louis, Mo., where it is used for traction purposes. Chicago was the next place of interest. Our departure from Keokuk at 7:50 put us there Tuesday, 6:50 A. M. After the all night ride, a hearty breakfast at the C. & N. IV. Station made us all feel better before looking over the C. & N. VV. Interlocking Plant. That name "Interlocking Plant" was more or less of a mystery to all of us. It turned out to be the system used in the switch yards where all of the C. & N. W'. trafiic is handled. All of the tracks are represented on an illuminated map in the trafiic room. All along the miniature tracks are strung a series of miniature lamps, each lamp representing a section of track out in the ard. As a train or engine moves along on the track the amp's corresponding section is illuminated through frosted glass. The switches are also controlled by a bank of levers strung along the base of the illuminated switchyard map. By this system the switching is all done from a central station and the operators have complete control over the yards and know at all times where the trains are running, thus avoiding collisions and promoting efiiciency. From 10 o'clock till noon the construction work on the new Union Depot, Burlington and Pennsylvania Terminals was watched.
