It was too much to hope, and, perhaps, more than should even have been desired, that the law should meet with no determined opposition, for opposition to a good law strengthens it as the storm winds do the pasture oak, the final result being that the labors of those who assail it strengthen i.t--s growth and spread its influence. The election, now sometime past, was too confused in its issues to serve very well as an index of prohibition sentiment, except in special instances. Interesting comparisons, ihowever. may be drawn between the result of the "Literary Digest" poll in several States where special votes, not for a candidate, seem to indicate that when it came to a regular election the bone drys were much more numerous than the "Digest" poll seemed to indicate. This, however, is no criterion of the "Digest" poll, but is undoubtedly due to the fact that the dissatisfied responded to the poll more generally than those who were favorable to prohibition. In Ohio the drys, in the recent election, defeated the beer and wine proposal by a majority of some 139,000. casting about 56 per cent. of the total vote, 'though in the "Literary Digest" poll they cast only 40 per cent. of the Ohio vote. ' In California the drys, by about 30, 000 majority, casting 51 per cent. of the total vote, incorporated into the statute law of the State the Eighteenth Amendment and the Volstead Act. although in the "Literary Digest" poll they cast but 35 per cent. of the California vote.
