" ' The roses, ' he said, 'once held a great meeting to compare views about various matters, and to form an alliance for mutual advantage. They bore many different names, such as moss rose, tea rose, dog-rose, cinnamon rose, and scores of others. They were of many different sizes, shapes, and colors. They had various ideas about soils and trellises, the best recipe for perfume, the use and abuse of thorns, and the origin of slugs and rose chafers. " 'At first they discussed their differences. Each one advocated his own pet idea and tried to haveit adopted as a part of the constitution. One wanted a certain size fixed upon as a condition of membership; another a certain color; another a certain mode of florescence. Some wanted to have climbing made compulsory. Some wanted to impose their own specific name upon all. The little wild rose claimed to be the only representative of the original type from which the rest had departed and to which they must return. At least a dozen of the more beautiful among them put in counter claims, one after another, each insisting that it was the last and most perfect product of rose culture, and that the rest must be brought up to the same high standard. Still others, of a philosophical turn, maintained that no existing type should be adopted, but that each should renounce its peculiarities and that all should conform to some new ideal to be agreed upon.
